Blocs over time

The same analysis as Blocs, repeated in a sliding window of years. Move the slider or press play to see how clusters form, split and merge, and how individual countries move between them.

Each frame uses only the votes inside its window. Early windows have few votes and few member states, so they are less reliable; countries joining or leaving the UN appear and disappear.

Flags are each country's current flag (the Soviet and Yugoslav flags for those states), not necessarily the flag at the time of the votes; a grey disc with letters means no suitable flag. Positions show how alike countries voted and are nudged apart so flags do not overlap, so distances are approximate. Select a bloc above to highlight it.

Bloc numbers and colours are matched from one window to the next by overlap, so a bloc keeps its colour while it persists; names are worked out afresh for each window. Tracked countries have a heavier ring and their UN country code (hover for the full name).

Bloc of each tracked country, window by window

The number is the bloc in that window (colour-matched across windows); a dash means the country is not in the analysis that year.
